Terms of Use

The rules for using Histriphy, creating an account, contributing maps, and downloading protected GeoJSON files.

Effective 20 July 2026Last reviewed 21 July 2026
Read this before using Histriphy

By using the service, creating an account, submitting a map, or downloading a protected file, you agree to these Terms and to the license and source conditions shown for each map. If you do not agree, do not use those parts of the service.

Contents
Agreement and eligibility Accounts and security Access and download limits Maps, licenses, and attribution Map submissions Third-party and restricted data Acceptable use Accuracy and disputed boundaries Rights and infringement reports Moderation and termination Availability and warranties Liability and responsibility Disputes and general terms Changes and contact

Agreement and eligibility

These Terms form an agreement between you and Histriphy. If you use Histriphy for a school, organisation, employer, or client, you confirm that you are authorised to accept these Terms for them.

You must be at least 13 to create an account. If the law where you live requires a higher age for independent consent, you may use an account only with valid permission from a parent or guardian.

Accounts and account security

Provide accurate information and keep it reasonably current. You are responsible for your password, connected Google account, authenticator app, recovery codes, and signed-in devices. Do not share an account or allow another person to use your download allowance.

If Google sign-in is offered and you choose it, Google authenticates the selected Google account while Histriphy controls the local account and session. Any Histriphy authenticator requirement continues after Google sign-in. Report suspected unauthorised access promptly.

Histriphy may require reauthentication, revoke sessions, slow or block repeated sign-in attempts, or request additional verification where reasonably necessary to protect an account or the service.

Service access and download limits

Features, access levels, submission tools, download allowances, and rapid-download limits may differ by user type or trust level. These controls protect licensed files and keep the library available. You must not avoid a limit through multiple accounts, shared credentials, automated requests, rotating connections, or similar methods.

A protected download gives access only to the specific file requested. It does not transfer ownership, remove attribution, or override the map page, included metadata, license, or applicable source conditions.

Maps, licenses, and attribution

Each map may carry its own license, attribution, source record, accuracy note, and permitted-use conditions. Review the map page and the material included with the download before using it. A specific license supplied with a file takes priority over a general summary on the website.

Unless the applicable map license clearly allows it, you may not resell a raw file, publish it in another downloadable library, remove required credit, claim another person’s work as your own, or use it contrary to its source conditions. The Histriphy License page explains the standard rules.

Histriphy’s name, branding, site design, software, documentation, and original editorial material remain protected by applicable intellectual-property law. Ordinary access to the website does not grant a right to reproduce those materials.

Your map submissions

You keep ownership of an original submission. By submitting a file, you grant Histriphy a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to receive, validate, secure, store, simplify, preview, review, classify, display, distribute, and preserve it for operating and promoting the map library. This permission continues while the map is published and for reasonable archival, security, attribution, backup, and dispute records.

You confirm that you created the submission or hold every permission needed to provide it. Your metadata, source statement, dates, and license information must be honest. Publication must not violate copyright, database rights, privacy, confidentiality, sanctions, contracts, or other legal restrictions.

Submission does not guarantee review, publication, promotion, permanent availability, or a particular category. Histriphy may reject, unpublish, correct, relabel, or ask for evidence about a submission.

Third-party and restricted data

Do not upload, extract, reproduce, or redistribute restricted data unless you hold clear permission for that use. This includes commercial datasets, confidential files, unlawfully scraped material, and data whose terms prohibit republication.

Basemaps, place labels, and other third-party services remain subject to their own notices and terms. Histriphy cannot grant rights it does not hold.

Acceptable use

You must not:

  • break the law, infringe another person’s rights, or upload material you are not authorised to share;
  • bypass authentication, protected storage, download controls, rate limits, or other safeguards;
  • scrape, crawl, enumerate, probe, reverse engineer, or collect protected content without written permission;
  • upload malware, corrupted archives, deceptive metadata, hidden payloads, or disruptive code;
  • access or attempt to access another user’s account, files, sessions, recovery codes, or personal information;
  • impersonate a person or organisation, misstate affiliation, or conceal a map’s true source;
  • overload, disrupt, or test Histriphy systems without written authorisation; or
  • use Histriphy to support unlawful surveillance, sanctions evasion, violence, discrimination, or serious harm.

Accuracy and disputed boundaries

Historical and modern boundaries may be approximate, disputed, simplified, incomplete, or based on sources that disagree. Dates and classifications may involve editorial judgement. A displayed boundary does not state Histriphy’s political position or recognition of sovereignty.

Maps are provided for exploration and general reference. They are not legal, diplomatic, navigation, military, engineering, financial, or other professional advice. Review the source notes and independently verify information before relying on it for research conclusions, publication, commercial work, or operational decisions. See the Map Data Policy for Histriphy’s review approach.

Rights and infringement reports

If you believe a map or other material infringes your rights, email info@histriphy.com with the relevant page address, a clear description of the protected work or right, the reason you believe the use is unauthorised, your contact details, and a statement that the information you provide is accurate. Histriphy may ask for identity or authority evidence before acting.

Histriphy may remove or restrict material while a report is reviewed and may give the contributor a reasonable opportunity to respond. Knowingly false or misleading reports are prohibited.

Moderation, suspension, and termination

Histriphy may remove content, restrict access, suspend downloads, revoke sessions, block automated traffic, or close an account where reasonably necessary to enforce these Terms, protect users or rights holders, investigate abuse, comply with law, or preserve the service. Serious security abuse may result in immediate action.

You may stop using Histriphy at any time. Account closure does not automatically remove published submissions, attribution records, security evidence, or information that must be retained for licensing, backups, disputes, or legal obligations.

Availability and warranties

Histriphy may change, pause, or discontinue features, limits, categories, maps, or integrations. Keep independent copies of important work. Uninterrupted service, error-free operation, permanent storage, and compatibility with every browser, device, or GeoJSON workflow cannot be guaranteed.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Histriphy and its content are provided “as is” and “as available,” without implied warranties of accuracy, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or uninterrupted availability. Nothing in these Terms removes a right or warranty that applicable law does not allow to be excluded.

Liability and responsibility for claims

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Histriphy will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive loss, or for loss of data, profit, opportunity, reputation, or business caused by use of or inability to use the service.

Where liability cannot legally be excluded, Histriphy’s liability will be limited to the minimum extent permitted by applicable law.

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to reimburse Histriphy for reasonable losses and costs arising from your unlawful use, your submission, your breach of these Terms, or your infringement of another person’s rights. This does not apply to the extent a claim was caused by Histriphy’s own unlawful conduct.

Disputes and general terms

Nothing in these Terms limits mandatory rights that apply where you live. Before starting formal proceedings, you and Histriphy should make a good-faith attempt to resolve the matter through the contact address below.

If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue. A delay in enforcement is not a waiver. You may not transfer your account or these Terms without written permission. Histriphy may transfer its rights and obligations as part of a genuine reorganisation or transfer of the service.

Changes and contact

Histriphy may update these Terms when the service, law, or risk environment changes. The effective date will be revised. Material changes will be highlighted on the website or sent to the account email where appropriate. Continued use after the new effective date means you accept the updated Terms.

Questions, rights notices, and reports of misuse may be sent to info@histriphy.com. Never include a password, authenticator secret, recovery code, Google client secret, or other private credential in an email.
