Map Data Policy

How Histriphy reviews sources, records uncertainty, handles disputed boundaries, and corrects published map data.

Effective 20 July 2026Last reviewed 21 July 2026
Our approach

Histriphy aims to make map provenance clear and geometry useful. A published map is a documented interpretation of its sources, not a claim that every border, date, or label is beyond dispute.

Scope and principles

This policy applies to maps published in the Histriphy library and to related titles, periods, categories, source notes, licenses, and review records. It explains editorial and data-quality practice. Personal information is covered by the Privacy Policy.

Histriphy reviews maps for reasonable file quality, useful metadata, apparent source compatibility, and consistency with the stated period. Review reduces errors but does not guarantee that a map is complete or universally accepted.

Official and community maps

Official uploads

An Official Upload is created, commissioned, or specifically approved by Histriphy. The label describes the publisher and review path. It does not mean that a government or external institution endorses the map.

Community uploads

A Community Upload is supplied by a contributor and reviewed before publication. Contributors remain responsible for having the right to submit the file and for accurately describing its sources, dates, and license.

Sources and provenance

Published maps should include enough information to understand where the geometry or historical interpretation came from. Depending on the map, this may include an institution, publication, dataset, author, archive, URL, access date, or explanatory source note.

Histriphy may ask for supporting evidence, correct a source field, add an accuracy note, change a category, or withhold publication where provenance is unclear. A source citation does not itself prove that redistribution is allowed.

Historical maps

Historical boundaries often changed gradually, were administered differently from how they were claimed, or are described differently by reliable sources. A date may represent a legal act, military control, administrative practice, a treaty, or a selected snapshot.

Where the evidence is uncertain, Histriphy may use approximate geometry, a date range, a qualifying description, or a source note. Users should compare the stated date and source before combining maps into a timeline or publication.

Modern and disputed boundaries

Modern borders and country names are provided for geographic context. Some territories, maritime claims, and boundaries are disputed. Their display does not express Histriphy’s political position, diplomatic recognition, or view of sovereignty.

A map may follow the boundary convention of its stated source. Alternative representations may also be published when they are clearly described and lawfully sourced.

Geometry processing and presentation

Histriphy may validate GeoJSON, repair limited structural problems, clip shapes to a coastline, merge features, simplify vertices, adjust preview framing, or generate derived preview data. These operations can change point counts and small details while preserving the intended overall shape.

Basemap labels and geographic context may come from third-party providers and may not use the same date, naming convention, or boundary interpretation as the featured historical geometry. Preview styling is not part of the downloaded GeoJSON unless stated otherwise.

Restricted source data

Histriphy does not accept data for republication where the contributor cannot show a compatible right or permission. Confidential, unlawfully scraped, or contractually restricted datasets may be rejected or removed.

Corrections, disputes, and removal

If you find a geometry, date, attribution, category, or source problem, send the map address, explain the issue, and provide a reliable supporting source or corrected GeoJSON where possible. Histriphy may mark a map for review, update its metadata, replace its file, add a note, or remove it.

Corrections are assessed according to the evidence and the purpose of the map. Histriphy may preserve older files and review records privately for security, attribution, backup, and dispute purposes even when a public version changes.
